Monroe County´s Voluntary Disability Insurance Program is designed to pay a benefit that replaces a portion of your pay check when you become disabled due to a covered illness or injury occurring on or off the job.

This disability program was specifically designed to recognize your earned sick leave and allows you to choose a waiting period that is most appropriate considering your accrued sick leave balance. The benefit waiting periods are 14, 30, 60 and 90 days. Selecting the appropriate waiting period ensures that you do not pay for insurance you may not need. You also have the choice of selecting the period that benefits will be payable, 180 days (STD), 2 years and to age 65 (LTD). If you become disabled, the benefit period will be the maximum period you will be eligible to receive benefits.

Short term disability (STD) benefits become payable on the later of the benefit waiting period or the end of your full paid sick leave. If you become disabled, STD benefits may continue up to 180 days. This is the maximum period for which STD benefits are payable

Long term disability (LTD) benefits become payable after you have been continuously disabled for 180 days and remain continuously disabled. As noted above, you can choose the maximum period for your LTD benefits; either 2 years or to age 65.

During Open Enrollment eligible employees have the ability to purchase short term disability insurance without answering any medical questions at the guarantee issue amount equal to 60% of your salary (plus overtime). The maximum benefit is $2,000 per week during the first 180 days of disability. For the extended benefit periods of 2 years or to age 65 (long term disability), you may purchase a benefit amount up to $10,000 per month upon approval by the insurance carrier.
